2025 / 2026 Indoor Meetings Programme 

We are pleased to announce that the following talks have been arranged for September 2025 through to April 2026. All meetings will be held at the University of Manchester Geology Department, Oxford Road, except the December meeting which will be on Zoom.

September 13th: Introduction to Geology for the Newly Interested Amateur

This free event is aimed at those who are new to geology and not aimed specifically at MGA members – although they are more than welcome to attend and if they have family, friends or neighbours who might be interested, please let them know. The timetable for the day is:

10:30 to 12:00 – Introduction to geology

12:00 to 12:30 – tea coffee biscuits

12:30 to 14:00 – A opportunity to look at a selection of geological specimens (rocks mineral and fossils) and maps with Department and MGA members there to assist.

Registration for this event is essential.

 

October 18th: The Broadhurst Lectures

The theme of these talks will be the “Past, Present and Future” and we have four talks. We will start at 12:00hrs.

Brian Jeffery (Geo Lancashire) will look at the Geology of Marple through the eyes of the eighteenth century Sam Oldknow.

Prof. Jonathan Mound (Leeds) will talk about Space Weather and forecasting Space Climate 

Dr Stuart Clarke (Keele University) will talk about his work on the evolution of the Carboniferous succession of Northern England

Dr Graham Leslie (BGS) will be talking about his work on the Whin Sill

 

November 15th: 

It is planned to have three lectures on this day. We will start at 13.00hrs.

Professor Hillary Kennedy (Bangor) will talk about Coastal ecosystems and their role in climate change mitigation

December 13th

This Zoom meeting will be on Zoom and will start at 13.00hrs

Mike Horne, Hull Geological Society will talk on Microfossils.

 

January 17th

This meeting will start at 13:00hrs and will be held at the University of Manchester.

Dr. Gordon McKeown will talk about his work on the Triassic

Dr Margaret Hartley (Manchester) will talk about Resources for the Modern World – Rare Earth Minerals

Professor Christopher Clark (Sheffield) will talk on the Rise and Fall of the British-Irish Ice Sheet

 

February 14th

This is our AGM and there will be a Presidential Address from Rufus.  We would like to ask members to contribute to this meeting, so we are looking for talks of around 15 – 20 minutes from two to three members.  Maybe holiday geology or a topic you’ve been looking into? We will start at 13:00hrs.

 

March 14th

We hope to have three speakers for this event which will start at 13:00hrs.

Dr. Adam Daniel McArthur (Leeds) will talk about Miocene aged source to sink sedimentary systems that he is working on in Morocco.
