2026 / 2027 Indoor Lecture Programme

The following talks have been arranged for the 2026 / 2027 season

19 September – This initial event is aimed at those people that are new to geology as well as those that would like a refresher. The event will also appeal to more experienced members since there will be a practical session – and perhaps a quiz – that looks at a selection of rock samples from the University teaching collection. There may also be an opportunity to view some of these in thin section. There will also be two talks introducing geological themes

October 17 – These annual Broadhurst Lectures will comprise three presentations:

  • Ian Jackson, author and podcaster will give a talk on the Geology of Hadrian’s Wall and how it influenced those who lived there.
  • Les Knight will talk about his work mapping glacial erratics across the country.
  • Dr Jamie Pringle will discuss forensic geophysics. The talk will show how geophysics assists police investigations by locating and characterising suspected illegal activities that ultimately provide evidence in courts of law.

November 21 – There will be two presentations:

  • Dr Guy Paxman will talk about his work on the sub-ice surface in Antarctica
  • Dr David McNamara from Liverpool University will speak on his work with hydrothermal alteration of mid oceanic ridge basalts and insights into CO2 storage and ocean floor tectonics.

December 12 – there will be two presentations on this day:

  • Professor Jonathan Redfern will talk about future prospects for hydrocarbons in UK waters
  • John Hodgson will talk about fossil footprints of the North Yorkshire coast

January 16 – there will also be two presentations on this day:

  • Professor Rick Battarbee – topic to be agreed
  • Professor Dave Healy will present the UK & Ireland geophysical array project

February 6 – This day will comprise the annual Presidential Address and talks from members about a topic of particular interest to themselves. The AGM will also be held on this day.
