Annual Joint Geol/Geog Associations Lecture

Wednesday 5th March: The Annual Joint Geol/Geog Associations Lecture will be held at the MMU’s Brooks Building Lecture Theatre 3.

The lecture will be by MMU’s Dr. Iestyn Barr who will give a presentation on “Volcanic hazard response to global glacier retreat” with reference to glaciation, volcanicity and geological timescales.

The lecture will be held on Wednesday 5th March 2025 at 5pm. Members are encouraged to attend what appears to be a fascinating lecture.

Annual General Meeting

February 15th: The Manchester Geological Association’s AGM will be held on Saturday 15th February 2025 at 1.30pm. The meeting will be held at the University of Manchester’s Williamson Building.

Following the AGM there will be the Annual President’s address, given this year by Dr Rufus Brunt from the University of Manchester.

Since this year marks the Centenary of the MGA our archivist, Jane Michael, has been cataloguing what has transpired to be quite an extensive archive of material dating back to the early years of the MGA at the beginning of the last Century. Following the President’s address, Niall Clarke will give a presentation highlighting some of the collection’s gems and selected items from the archive will be available for viewing afterwards.  If members have artifacts relating to the MGA they would like to show to others, please do bring them along.

Wednesday March 5th : Joint talk with the Geographical Association: at 5pm in MMU’s Brooks Building Lecture Theatre 3 where MMU’s Dr. Lestyn Barr (Department of Natural Sciences, Manchester Metropolitan University) will present on “Volcanic hazard response to global glacier retreat” with reference to glaciation, volcanicity and geological timescales.

Since this is the Centenary year for the MGA, the Geologist Association Guide no.7 –  “Geology of the Manchester Area” – is being revised under the auspices of the MGA led by Peter del Strother ably assisted by some members of the MGA and personnel from Manchester University . In addition to the outdoor field-trips that will be run to present these walks there will be a series on virtual walks given by the authors. The April, May and June meetings (dates to be confirmed) will therefore be virtual field trips to introduce these excursions. These virtual field trips will also incorporate “teaching points” that will enable non-geologists to appreciate these talks as well as geologists.

The Manchester Geological Association welcomes new members. Anyone with an interest in geology can join the Association at any time.
We were formed in 1925 to bring together professional and amateur geologists in and around Manchester.
We are actively concerned in the conservation of key geological sites in the area.
We organise field excursions during the summer to places such as the Lake District, Scotland, Peak District and North Wales.
In the winter we hold monthly lectures by expert speakers at the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester, where we also have access to a library of geological books and maps.
We join other local Geological Societies for their lectures and field trips.
Quarterly newsletters giving full details of trips and other news are mailed to members.
Manchester Geological Association is registered as a charity (Charity No. 500532). Our constitution can be read in pdf or Word format.
